Lambretta Speedo drive two pieces, worm and drive, metal, MB

MBP0088S

We were all getting sick of using the plastic speedo drives as they rarely lasted.

Original steel ones are very hard to find so we remade them in steel.

Ideal for any Lambretta Series 1, 2 or 3.

Another MBP remade product.

Tips

When fitting these new speedo drives sometimes they may need lapping in with grinding paste, this is because there are so many differences in machined hubs.

Occasionally the speedo drive pinion may need some modification or a washer fitting first, this again is because there are so many different hubs all been machined different.

After numerous nylon worms and drives lasting a couple of miles I purchased a remade metal, MRB worm and drive. I've only done 70 miles so far but Verry happy with it so far, nice smooth operation .

Brilliant nice and smooth speedo,in fact I've gone from having speedo that was like a geiger counter to one that works properly, highly recommend

Parts were easy to fit, but there were a few high spots on the meshing of the worm & drive which could be felt as tightness when the wheel was turned by hand. After a run of 5or 6 miles the high spots had been worn off & the wheel felt smooth to turn. The speedo works fine - the "old" nylon gears which had covered around 1300 miles were starting to slip at higher speeds causing fluctuation of the needle.

Well made and very close meshing so before pressing i matched the hub high spot to the worm gear low spot to reduce run out, works superb

Have now fitted the worm and drive to my '58' framebreather and now have a speedo that works like a dream. The drive took a fair amount of lapping as stated, but was well worth the effort. This upgrade is worth the time and money spent. MB quality parts every time.

Sid on 26 Jan 2022 asked "Hi thanks for the tips and advice on fitting the metal speedo drive. Can you elaborate on how do do the lapping in process please. Many thanks Bolti"

MB Scooters Ltd replied: If its slightly tight or has a high spot feel, try some fine grinding paste and spin the wheel to bed it in, then give it a good clean and grease on assembly

Simon G on 04 Jan 2020 asked "Do I have to heat the worm,as it does seem to small for spaq disc"

MB Scooters Ltd replied: Ive never had to heat a worm, they should be a tight fit. Maybe freeze the hub before fitting the worm

Karl on 07 Apr 2018 asked "Could you tell me what the washer is for and where it goes please. Thanks. "

MB Scooters Ltd replied: I goes on the long worm, first as it is fitted, but only on some models, its a spacer washer

Paul on 22 Feb 2018 asked "Hi, I have fitted the drive to the hub and fully assembled the front wheel. I have just had a thought, should I have lubricated the drive in any way. I haven't fitted the worm yet. If it does need grease can it be applied to the worm or will I need to take the hub apart. Thanks for any help you can give"

MB Scooters Ltd replied: Yes it need grease to lubricate it. Strip the hub, cover the hub drive with grease and grease the worm and work shaft

Paul on 26 Mar 2012 asked "Hi, I have fitted an outboard disc kit with a useless drive kit as standard. It lasted 200 miles. Do you know if if this fits the aftermarket outboard kit?"

JLB on 04 Jul 2011 asked "I have a question about "Speedo drive two pieces, worm and drive, remade metal, MRB" Do they work on a Cento as well? "

MB Scooters Ltd replied: Not 100% sure but I don't think so

Adam S on 10 Mar 2011 asked "I have a question about "Speedo drive two pieces, worm and drive, remade metal, MRB". I fitted these to a new old stock hub yesterday! Fitting was easy and simple and seemed to go ok! However, the hub now locks at one particular spot, it will still spin with a little pressure but it feels like a very tight spot! Is this normal? Have I fitting it wrong? I dont recall the old one I am replacing having this issue - cheers."

MB Scooters Ltd replied: Sometimes it's possible to feel a high spot. The easy way is to spin the hub with some grinding paste on th ewheels which will bed them in. Make sure you give it a really good clean up afterwards.

Mike M on 31 Jan 2011 asked "I have a question about "Speedo drive two pieces, worm and drive, remade metal, MRB" Hi Mark, I seem to remember in the past it being suggested to lap these in with gringing paste, is this still recommended? Cheers Mike"

MB Scooters Ltd replied: Because of the variants in machining of the gears and of hubs, sometimes it is necessary or best to lap the gears with thin grinding paste. Always give them a good clean afterwards.

Billy on 12 Aug 2009 asked "I have a question about "Speedo drive two pieces, worm and drive, remade metal, MRB" Does this suit an Indian GP 200? Are they in stock?"

MB Scooters Ltd replied: Our speedo drives fit all Series 1, 2 and 3 front hubs either drum or disc type hubs.

Dave on 01 Dec 2008 asked "I have a question about "Speedo drive two pieces, worm and drive, remade metal, MRB" Would you have a pinion in stock on it's own please? I bought a set a number of years and only fitted the pinion but it wore out because it was not compatible with the original drive wheel. I still have your drive wheel but need a pinion to fit it properly. Thanks."

MB Scooters Ltd replied: Im afraid these are sold as a pair.

Frank on 13 Jul 2008 asked "Hi Mark, when will this item be back in stock? cheers frank"
